LP & THE VINYL
LP and The Vinyl isn't your typical jazz band—they’re the kind of group that gets under your skin and stays there. These four San Diego musicians didn’t come together to play it safe; they came to push the boundaries of what it means to make music. Led by the charismatic Leonard Patton, a vocalist who could make a grocery list sound soulful, and backed by the critically acclaimed Danny Green Trio, this band brings together a melting pot of influences—jazz, R&B, rock, 80s and 90s hits, and even Brazilian and classical music.
They don’t just play music; they deconstruct it, rebuild it, and make it their own. You might hear them tear through Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, or David Bowie with a kind of raw, unfiltered energy that feels almost dangerous. Every time they hit the stage, they’re taking risks, throwing it all out there with no safety nets, no backup plan. And that’s what makes them electric. Danny Green on piano, Justin Grinnell on bass, and Julien Cantelm on drums—these guys are masters of their craft, playing off each other in ways that seem almost telepathic. And Patton? He’s not just a singer, he’s a performer who pulls the audience into his world from the first note to the last.
Since forming in 2015, LP and The Vinyl has been everywhere—from the Telluride Jazz Festival to the Museum of Making Music. Their debut album, Heard and Seen, dropped in 2020, and it’s as eclectic as they are—The Beatles, Quincy Jones, David Bowie, Oasis—all reimagined, alongside their own originals and jazz standards. Critics like Travis Rogers Jr. know what’s up—he called their work “telepathic” and described them as a group that demands attention.
And these aren’t just performers. They’re teachers, too—dedicated music educators who hold faculty positions at University of San Diego and Grossmont College, giving workshops and clinics across the U.S. LP and The Vinyl isn’t just a band. They’re a force—dynamic, risky, and always ready to make you rethink what you know about music.
