Some DJs learn to read a room. Taylor Michael learned to live inside one.

He got his first set of turntables at eleven and never really considered a Plan B. Funk, punk, hip-hop, rock, disco, pop, electro—if it moves people, it belongs in the conversation. The genre matters less than knowing exactly what a room needs next.

Taylor cut his teeth in Reno, Nevada, playing nightclubs and bars before he was old enough to have much patience for anything else. By nineteen, he was working packed rooms every weekend, learning the part of DJing that can’t be taught in a bedroom: people are unpredictable, the night moves fast, and nobody cares about your carefully planned set if the dance floor suddenly wants something different.

San Diego came next. Taylor moved west, earned his place in the local scene, won DJ battles, picked up residencies, and eventually turned the thing he had been doing since childhood into a full-time career.

Since then, he has become a familiar presence behind the decks at Southern California clubs, resorts, private events, and major venues, with residencies that have included Barleymash, The Local Pacific Beach, Harrah’s Resort Southern California, and events at Petco Park. Along the way, he has shared stages and bills with artists including Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, Cypress Hill, Nelly, Flo Rida, Christina Aguilera, Robin Thicke, Warren G, Tyga, and Mac Miller.

But a good DJ résumé only gets you so far. Eventually somebody has to press play.

That’s where Taylor earns it—reading the crowd, changing direction when the room demands it, and finding the song that turns a collection of strangers into the same party.

More than two decades after getting those first turntables, he’s still doing exactly that.
